OK, hotels aren't great and the public transport verges on awful, however the skiing and nightlife more than makes up for this. The skiing is, frankly, the best in Europe, kicks the*** out off Val de Sloane Square, Tignes, Courchavelle, Meribelle, Flaine, Avoriaz, Chamonix and everywhere else I’ve skied. The night life is also amazing, head to Farinet for apres ski then stagger to Mont Fort followed by the short crawl to Cas bar or Tara's (but don’t get there before…

At only 1050m Engelberg is low, but dont let this put you off. Much of the best skiing is above 1800m, and the area has a justified reputation for powder. The best snow is usually on the high, north-facing slopes of Jochpass and Titlis (where there is a glacier) and conditions here can be great well into spring. Snow cover and quality is more variable on the lower slopes, particularly on Brunni, which is more exposed to the sun.
