Every time I return to Les Carroz it continues to surprise me. The Grand Massif ski area is amazing - a real mix of tree-lined skiing at Les Carroz, open pistes at Flaine and untouched off-piste bowls above Morrillon, Samoens and Sixt. Les Carroz is a beautiful place to stay - a charming vilage compared to its ugly sister Flaine. It is also convenient, only six minutes into the heart of the ski area. The cable car to the Hausberg has been replaced with a fast step on step off gondola system- as has the Kreuzeckbahn, these changes have greatly improved the lift system. Garmisch is gearing up to host the world cup in 2011 and is investing in its infrastructure. Grainau- 6 km from Garmisch- lies on the glacial cog wheel railway, right under the Zugspitz and is a quaint alpine village well supplied with restaurants. We spent last Christmas in Les Gets - and despite the lack of snow we had a great time. As a family group with an adult beginner (the rest of us are not that much better!) the wide pistes were great and allowed us all to ski together for a large percenatage of the time. With the full range of slopes open there would have been more than enough for us to do - and as it was the limited snow available just meant we explored the open slopes more thoroughly and honed our skiing techniques.…
