Unlike most resorts linked to major ski areas, Chatel remains relatively unspoiled and retains a very French feel. It is also right on the huge Portes du Soleil circuit, very close to the Swiss b*. It has two separate sectors of slopes, one linked to its French neighbour – high, purpose-built Avoriaz – and the other linked to two resorts in Switzerland: Morgins (which is on the Portes du Soleil circuit) and Torgon (which is not on the circuit).

It's true the main mountain in Chatel is a nightmare for boarders with loads of drag lifts if you want to head to the better slopes in Swizterland, but there are a number of good long off-piste runs if your prepared to endure the drags. All the best terrain is futher along the road in Pre la joux and linga which is acesed by the free ski bus going every ten mins, at both places there a good number of reds and blues and on powder days you cant beat Happy valley with various off-piste areas with natural jumps hits and various sized *** offs. Chatel is good location if you want to explore the Portes du Soleil.

My girlfriend and I stayed in Petit Chatel for new years eve. We had a great time in Chatel - new years eve was a real buzz. My girlfriend is a professional skier and is skiing for the England Team. She too enjoyed the good snow at Chatel this year and the views from the apartment we stayed in were fantastic. We strongly recommend staying in Chatel area as it is very French and a very cosy atmosphere... We spent our evenings having great fun sledging down the slopes up behind the apartment - just the two of us!!! If you haven't been there, make sure to visit!

A very badly planned resort. The two parts of the resort (Super Chatel and Linga/Pre la Joux) are not directly linked. The free bus services do not stop close to the lift system, esp at Super Chatel, which means a very tiring 200m walk uphill before you even start to ski. And the buses stop at around 5.30pm, and not a taxi in sight. The slopes are a nice mix of greens, blues, reds and blacks. The flat narrow blues are even more difficult than the reds. Queueing is rare, and the slopes are fairly uncluttered. Links to the whole of Portes du Soleil region comes as a welcome escape from the Chatel slopes. The town is nice and picturesque, but although the reviews say nice eating out, we could o

A lovely resort. Much prettier than expected from the report. Very much chalet developments rather than any ugly higher buildings. The skiing is superb in one of the largest ski areas in europe - something for everyone. Easy access to Avoriaz which is very high but does tend to get a little crowded - more fun to head around the nearby swiss resorts. The snow park at Super Chatel is good with some fun jumps. Good restaurants and a friendly atmosphere - we'll certainly return
