I'm afraid that I found Bansko very disappointing - visited at New Year for a week and would not return, regardless of how cheap it is. It didn't help that we were "bumped" to a superior hotel 10kms out of town; I wanted the quaint and more traditional, not the expensive and superficial. The trip that I had planned and paid for meant that I would be within walking distance of my 6 friends staying in the centre of town. While Bansko is not at fault for this, I found the whole "construction site ambience" very unwelcoming and it seems obvious that unless the skiing infrastructure is massively overhauled, there are way too many hotels being built. We visited Bansko last year, in the low season and had a fabulous time. The skiing was great for intermediates and it was not crowded at all. It really is excellent value for money. Some of the mehanas in the old town are lovely and the food was delicious. We stayed at Chalet Rozov (fantastic!), on the outskirts of Bansko, so it was nice and peaceful, although there were bars around and there was a shuttle bus to the Bansko apres-ski if we wanted it! We'll be back next year!
