The cable car to the Hausberg has been replaced with a fast step on step off gondola system- as has the Kreuzeckbahn, these changes have greatly improved the lift system. Garmisch is gearing up to host the world cup in 2011 and is investing in its infrastructure. Grainau- 6 km from Garmisch- lies on the glacial cog wheel railway, right under the Zugspitz and is a quaint alpine village well supplied with restaurants. Easy access to the slopes even without a car and quieter than Garmisch itself.

Tip #1: Get away from town. Haus and Alpspitze are not good. Head up to Zugspitze on Pow days. It's best if you can catch it during the week when there's alot of fresh snow. It's small but the off piste is good if you just hit it hard all day and find good lines from top to bottom. A few pit stops in the Red Bull tent make it even better. The music is as good as the beer. If you love trees there's a killer time to be had, IF you know where to find it. When you leave the peak take the cog wheel train out, talk to the train operator and ask him to stop at the end of the tunnel. When you get out of the train all the skiers will zoom down one last groomer for the day, just look to your right and

I went to the slopes in Garmisch and Zugspitz areas and thought the skiing was fantastic. Even though I went at the end of the season (in March/April) the snow was still fantastic. The weather was clear most of the week with only 1 day producing challenging conditions! As a beginner i thought it would be really difficult to get used to the slopes but they were in really good condition every morning, well pisted and due to the lateness in the season, not at all crowded. The lifts took me to some amazing views and the downhill ski was spectacular. My entire group enjoyed a thoroughly extensive week of skiing in Germany and I'm hoping to return again next year to the same areas as I now know th

The highest point of Germany. Nice place, big too, for a ski town. Mountain isn't huge but so long as you don't leave it till late in the season, the lower slopes will be ski-able too. It made an great weekend, though I'm not too sure if it would keep me interested for a whole week. Be warned though, they don't seem to close the slopes when the conditions , so if you start seeing grass and mud, head up higher on the zugspitze.
