I rocked up to Abetone because I was en route to the Dolomites from Rome and thought I'd give it a try. Talk about cold, it was minus 14 celcius with a wind chill factor I don't even want to talk about. There were icicles 25 cms long and they were horizontal (I have the pictures to prove it). All that said it's a small resort, very easy to get around with a nice variety of runs. This would suit the intermediate skier/snowboarder, the latter of which comprised at least half those on the slopes when I was there. They have some excellent modern chairs and, at the other end of the scale, the world's slowest (and smallest I'm sure) chair lift though it's fair to suggest hardly anyone uses the run
