The state of Tirol ended the ski season prematurely due to the Corona virus. As of Sunday (March 15), all ski areas will be closed, the state announced Thursday evening. After a meeting with representatives of Tyrolean tourism, it was decided that the cable cars would be closed on Sunday, based on the Epidemic Act. In addition, all accommodation facilities will be officially closed on Monday, Monday was chosen so that "an orderly return trip of the guests from the ski areas can take place", it said. "For us, the health of our guests, employees and the Tyrolean population comes first," said Governor and Tourism Officer Günther Platter (ÖVP): "This decision was not an easy one for us, but we take responsibility for all Tyroleans and for everyone who are in Tyrol. "

The province is home to many of Austria and the world’s best-known ski resorts including Innsbruck, Sankt Anton, Solden, Kitzbuhel, Westendorf, Soll, Ellmau, Serfaus, Mayrhofen and Obergurgl as well as dozens of other ski areas. Ski resort of Ischgl announced the early end of the season a few hours earlier, after almost half of the confirmed coronavirus cases in Tyrol had a direct or indirect connection to Ischgl.

As of Thursday afternoon Austria knows of 361 coronavirus-infected people, 110 of them in Tyrol, the number of people infected with the coronavirus is continuously increasing. The country reported its first death from the virus today.

The economic losses that will result from the premature ending of the winter season cannot yet be estimated. However, the companies are well positioned and they want to start again in full in the next winter season.

Status

AUSTRIA: Tirol, Salzburgerland and Vorarlberg close on Sun March 15th.

ITALY: All Italian ski resorts are now closed.

FRANCE: French ski resorts are closing on Sun March 15th.

SWITZERLAND: Ticino – an Italian-speaking canton bordering  Italy, has closed all its 13 ski resorts, including Nara – Leontica and Bosco Gurin – Grossalp.

All other Swiss ski resorts are open and functioning as usual.

SLOVAKIA: All slovakian resorts are now closed.

NORWAY: All resorts are closing.
