Snow matters, but so do terrain, altitude, lift infrastructure, travel time, resort size, family suitability and the kind of trip you are planning. A destination that is excellent for a week of expert skiing may be a poor choice for a short break. A very large ski area may look impressive on paper, but that does not necessarily make it the best fit for your priorities. And a resort with a strong long-term reputation can still be less attractive if current conditions are weak.

That is the problem we have been working on with the latest generation of the SkiWeather.eu WhereToSki Finder and Benchmark applications. Rather than simply filtering a database of resorts, the new system is designed to support an actual decision. It brings together structural resort characteristics, snow reliability, historical snow behaviour, current conditions, terrain, lift infrastructure, accessibility and your own preferences, and then explains why certain destinations emerge as stronger choices than others.

The result is a much more advanced way to answer a simple question: where should I ski?

From filtering to decision support

The first step remains familiar. WhereToSki lets you define the conditions that a resort must meet, such as minimum altitude, snow reliability, ski level or size. These are treated as genuine must-haves. If a destination does not satisfy one of them, it does not qualify.

What is new is what happens after that.

A hard requirement is not the same as a preference. You may insist on a high-altitude destination but still care much more about terrain than access. Or you may want a large ski area, while placing extra emphasis on family suitability. The upgraded Finder therefore separates eligibility from preference.

Must-haves decide which ski areas remain in the search. Priorities decide how those qualifying areas are ranked.

You can use predefined profiles such as Balanced, Snow, Family, Expert and Short break, or adjust the balance yourself. The decision model is organised around six broad dimensions: Snow, Terrain, Ski-area scale, Lift system, Access, and Family & value. This keeps the interface understandable while allowing a much more detailed assessment underneath.

Fit is now personal

One of the most important changes is the introduction of the Fit score.

Fit is different from the general SkiWeather Score. The general score reflects the overall quality of a ski destination. Fit measures how well a resort matches the priorities of the current search.

That means a resort can be outstanding in general terms without necessarily being the best choice for your trip. A famous high-end destination may score very well overall, while a smaller resort with easier access and more suitable terrain may produce the better Fit for a family weekend.

The Fit calculation uses far more than simple resort categories. Where the data are available, it can consider actual piste kilometres, vertical range, the distribution of easy, intermediate and difficult terrain, the amount of skiing above key altitude levels, lift capacity relative to ski-area size, terrain served per lift, accessibility and historical snow characteristics.

Just as importantly, missing information is not treated as a failure. If a particular measurement is unavailable, it remains unknown rather than being converted into zero. The ranking is recalculated using the evidence that is actually available, while the confidence in the assessment is adjusted accordingly. This prevents less completely documented resorts from disappearing simply because one advanced data field is missing.

Snow is no longer just one number

Snow reliability is one of the most important reasons people use SkiWeather.eu, so it now receives a much deeper treatment inside WhereToSki and Benchmark.

The system can look beyond a static snow-reliability classification and analyse how a destination has behaved across multiple winters. Where enough historical information exists, it evaluates early-season snow, core-winter conditions, late-season retention, variability between seasons and the behaviour of upper and lower slopes.

This makes it possible to distinguish between general snow reliability and historical snow resilience.

Two resorts at similar altitude can behave very differently in weaker winters. One may retain strong lower-mountain coverage, while another may become increasingly dependent on its highest terrain. A lower resort may occasionally outperform expectations because it retains snow unusually well for its elevation. Those differences are now part of the decision process.

The scoring also becomes season-aware. In March and April, high-altitude terrain and late-season snow retention naturally become more important. In December, early-season reliability carries more weight. The system therefore tries to evaluate a resort in the context of when you actually intend to ski, rather than applying exactly the same snow logic throughout the winter.

Fit and current conditions are kept separate

Another major improvement is the distinction between the enduring qualities of a ski area and what is happening there now.

The new applications use three related concepts.

Fit describes how well a destination structurally matches your priorities. Now describes the current skiing opportunity where sufficiently recent information is available. Decision combines the two.

Keeping these concepts separate is important. A poor weather week should not suddenly make an excellent ski area look structurally weak. At the same time, exceptionally good current conditions can make another destination particularly attractive right now.

The amount of influence given to current conditions depends on the freshness and completeness of the available information. If the live evidence is limited, its effect is reduced automatically. The structural Fit remains the foundation.

This means the final recommendation can reflect both long-term suitability and short-term opportunity without confusing the two.

Why does one resort rank above another?

A recommendation is far more useful when the reasoning behind it is visible.

The expanded Fit view now shows how different dimensions contribute to the result. A destination may stand out because of snow resilience, terrain breadth, high-altitude skiing, lift efficiency or particularly easy access. Another may have a more balanced profile with no single dominant strength.

The system also identifies the character of a destination. Depending on the available evidence, a ski area may emerge as a large-domain explorer, a high-alpine snow specialist, an advanced-terrain destination, a family-oriented base or an efficient short-break option.

The intention is not to attach marketing labels to resorts. It is to make the ranking easier to understand by describing what each destination is actually strong at.

Benchmark now focuses on trade-offs

Benchmark has evolved in parallel with WhereToSki. Once several destinations have been selected, the application compares them using the same decision model rather than presenting a separate, disconnected analysis.

The comparison now focuses on trade-offs. A resort may lead because of snow and terrain but lose ground on access. Another may offer better lift infrastructure and family suitability while being less compelling for expert skiers. Benchmark makes those differences explicit.

It can also identify destinations that sit on the Pareto frontier: options that are not clearly outperformed by another candidate across the important dimensions. This helps separate genuinely different choices from resorts that are simply weaker alternatives.

The aim is not always to produce one absolute winner. Sometimes the most useful conclusion is that two destinations are both strong, but for different reasons.

How robust is the recommendation?

A small difference between two scores should not always be interpreted as a decisive result. The upgraded system therefore also examines ranking stability.

It tests how the result changes when the selected priorities are adjusted slightly. If the same resort remains on top across many reasonable variations, the recommendation is considered robust. If the winner changes easily, the application shows that the decision is more sensitive to personal preference.

Benchmark can go one step further and identify what would need to change for another resort to become the preferred option. For example, a destination may overtake the current leader if easy access becomes substantially more important, or if snow is given greater weight.

Those alternative scenarios can then be explored directly.

This turns comparison into something more useful than simply reading a ranking. It allows you to understand the decision itself.

A more useful answer to “where should I ski?”

The new WhereToSki and Benchmark applications are intended to make ski-resort selection more transparent, more personal and more responsive to real conditions.

You can still use them quickly: apply a few filters, choose a priority and browse the results. But if you want to go deeper, the system can now explain why a resort fits, where its strengths come from, how reliable the evidence is, what trade-offs are involved and how easily the recommendation could change.

There is rarely one universally best ski resort.

There is, however, often a destination that is better suited to a particular skier, a particular trip and a particular moment.

That is the decision SkiWeather.eu is now designed to help you make.

https://skiweather.eu/wheretoski

Choosing a ski resort has always involved compromise.
