During our third trip there in January on the trot, Leogang again delivered in spades during the annual friends get-together. Early January sees two highly entertaining weekends in the village – the Ice Speedway and an old timers traditional wooden ski equipment World Championships . The latter is an excuse for enthusiastic Austrians to dress up in tweed or loden jackets and old leather buckled ski boots and then strap on dodgy-looking prehistoric pointed planks and hurtle down from the top of the Asitz through the trees on the most direct route to the Kirchplatz! Our watering hole was again the excellent Kirchenwirt – Hannes and Elisabeth were as hospitable as ever. The

Leogang did not disappoint. Although virtually unknown, it's really the thinking man's way into the Saalbach Hinterglemm Ski Circus, with most of its slopes north facing, well covered by artificial snow and a village untouched by mass Alpine tourism. You don't get any of those 10 am village queue bottlenecks, like going up to the Bernkogel out of Saalbach, nor do you get too much problem with south facing, slushy slopes like those you'll find on the Kohlmaiskopf or Reiterkogel. Further round the ski circuit. Leogang's ski area is served by the recently refurbished Asitzbahn which whisks you in ten minutes to the top of the snow trap of the Grosse Asitz at 1870m-the 10km blue/red run back to t

My partner and I went to Leogang over new year 2005-2006. I have skied quite a lot before but for him it was all new. The nursery slopes by main Leogang gondola are absolutely fine. He was whizzing down them after a couple of days. I would however off a slight word of caution to beginners considering Leogang for a weeks holiday. The runs to the resort from both the mid- and top station of the gondola, although graded blue, are not suitable for near beginners. A look at an old piste map reveals theyve been regraded from red to blue... also, the links with Saalbach-hinterglemm are a problem for novices and early intermediates. As a result, you would be fairly confined in terms of extent. If th
